My Army LTC friend told me that Vietnam and Afghanistan were totally winnable but the cost to both the soldiers, the enemy, and civilians was too dear for public and world opinion to stomach. To win would require the sort of razing that crimes on humanity are made of. Same thing with America's out-of-control street crime and gang violence. Even saying "gang violence" rings of racism. Any solution is untenable. To be that guy who quotes Virgil, "The remedy is worse than the disease."
