The Burble and Pop of Distant Fireworks

I was asleep when the massive ack ack of fireworks started in Washington, 5 miles away, but they woke me up but were muted enough that I couldn't tell what was going on from bed. So I thought maybe it was something weird happening in my apartment until I finally recognized the patter and then identified the big finale as I've attended a million DC fireworks displays. But, at first, I was freaking out: what was breaking, what was leaking, what was glitching, were these my last moments in earth? Phew!
